Their coats are like hair, they don’t have fur, so they will lose some but not shed like other breeds do. This is a very good breed to have if you suffer from allergies. How much grooming do they require? Yorkshire terriers require a lot of grooming! Grooming a Yorkshire Terrier can be very time consuming and needs to be done if you don’t want your Yorkshire terriers coat to matt and become a mess. If you can’t commit to the frequent brushing that is necessary to avoid this then you will have to at least commit to trimming your yorkies coat and keeping it neat and healthy. Do yorkies need a lot of exercise? The Yorkshire Terrier is a lively breed but does not need a lot of exercise. They are very active indoors and will do well as apartment dogs. A yorkie however, will benefit from regular opportunities to run and play. Their high energy level means they will enjoy playing games and going out for walks. Are yorkies good with children? Yorkies are affectionate dogs however they are not naturally good with children. A yorkie which has been exposed to children as a puppy and brought up with them should be fine. Sometimes the problem lies in the fact that small children are not aware that they can easily hurt these small dogs. Therefore it is advised that yorkies and small children are always supervised. Would you recommend I buy a male or female? Male and female Yorkies have different characters. Female Yorkies are affectionate, but on a different level to male Yorkies. They enjoy lap attention and plenty of fussing. Male Yorkies are more sociable dogs. They do not tend to shy away from visitors and like their presence to be known, and sometimes felt, straight away. They enjoy playing on a more regular basis and do so with a great appetite for fun. Do they bark a lot? Yorkies tend to bark a lot! This makes them excellent guard dogs because they will sound the alarm when anyone gets near, be it day or night. If this does not sound like something you want to put up with do not buy a Yorkshire Terrier. This barking problem can be resolved by the proper training.
