Title

Yorkie Drinks too Much

by Liz Finn
(Commerce City, CO)

Question

I just adopted a Yorkie from a local shelter.

She is very small (5 lbs) and drinks a ton of water, pees multiple times a day (sometimes more then once in one outing)and she licks or bites her feet.

In the middle of the night she will wake up 4 times to go outside to pee and drink water.

I put the water up and her looking for water continues and she still needs to go 4x a night.

What do I do?

I think a vet appointment is appropriate but my google searches look really bleak.

Please help. thank you.

Answer

It is definitely time to take your Yorkie to the vet.

Some dogs do just drink a lot of water, which, in turn, causes frequent urination, but there is no way to know if there is an underlying problem until a veterinarian checks your dog out properly.

The internet is full of worst case scenarios, but usually the answer is something much simpler.

Even if your Yorkie is just a heavy drinker with an allergy to grass on his or her feet, seeing the vet will ease all of your concerns because he or she will run blood work to make sure that all of these worst case scenarios are unfounded.
