Tips for Helping a Yorkie Sleep through the Night

There are few things cuter in life than a Yorkshire terrier puppy. Although this particular breed is gorgeous at any age, while a puppy these dogs are simply irresistible. However, before buying a Yorkie, an individual would need to consider several things to include potty training and getting the dog to sleep through the night. After all, puppies are very similar to babies in that they need time to adjust and at least initially a lot of sleep.

The potty training issue is not too difficult since Yorkshire terriers are extremely smart and eager to please whereas sleeping all night is a different subject. Getting a Yorkie to sleep through the night can be an exhausting process for anyone but for a pet owner who works outside the home, this can be somewhat difficult. Even so, there are things that can help as shown with the information provided.

Achieving Success

To begin, a puppy sleeps on average anywhere from 16 to 22 hours every day, which consists of hours of sleep as well as quick naps. With age, the demand for sleep begins to lessen but even then dogs enjoy sleeping. Therefore, someone who buys a Yorkie should expect significant time sleeping but also challenges of getting a Yorkie to sleep through the night since most want to investigate or play.

The goal is to start taking appropriate measures for correcting unwanted behavior immediately. In addition, because Yorkshire terriers are high energy, the owner will need to be consistent but also patient. Following are a few tips on how to promote nighttime sleep.

o Approximately 30 minutes to one hour prior to bedtime it would help to spend adequate playtime with the puppy, whether in the form of actual playtime with toys, running around outside, or going for a brisk walk. o Water should be withheld at least two hours prior to bedtime. Then, the last meal of the day should occur during the early evening hours and consist of enough food to keep the puppy’s tummy feeling full.

o While tempting to allow a puppy to sleep in the bed, to get a Yorkie to sleep through the night he should have his own kennel with a comfortable bed. The kennel should be large enough for the puppy to turn around but not too big to make him feel safe and secure. It would also be important to keep the kennel clean at all times from potty accidents so the space is always inviting.

o Training is also an excellent option for getting a Yorkie to sleep through the night. While this might take a little bit of time and effort, it would be worth it. A simple command such as “bedtime” or “sleep” could be used, encouraging the puppy to retire to the kennel.

o Finally, because Yorkshire terriers are high-energy dogs, some people find cuddle time and a puppy massage works great for promoting sleep. However, to make this work it would be important for the Yorkie puppy to already be settled in the kennel.
